Sweet 16 Party Budgeting

Don't panic! You don't need to spend a fortune to celebrate your Sweet 16.

If you are planning to host your Sweet 16 party in a private room at a hotel or restaurant your teen is very lucky.  Have fun planning the menu, table decorations and entertainment with the banquet staff.

Backyard Birthday PartyIf you are looking for a less expensive alternative here are several options:

  • Backyard BBQ: If the season is right hosting a party in your own backyard will give you greater flexibility and a more personal atmosphere.

  • Consider co-hosting a party with other families. Talk to your teen's friends or relatives whose birthdays are close to your teen's.  Joint parties take some coordinating, but sharing in the rental costs, food preparation and expenses will likely be worth it.

Tip:  Ginger's son and one of his girl friends realized that their birthday's were just one day apart.  Together we planned a backyard bbq.  It was a relief to Ginger to have a large group of girls to mingle with her son's large group of boys!

  • Limit your menu to snacks that can be frozen or stored for later use.

  • If you prefer to provide a full buffet, limit the expensive items and stock up on non-perishable items that are easy to store if you don't use them for the party.

  • Ask family and friends to make a food item for the buffet.

  • Buy paper goods at a seasonal sale.

After years of planning birthday parties we've come up with four sample budgets and a budget worksheet, including a printable worksheet.
